NAPLAN results outstanding

30/10/2013
Generally, Our school has performed very well in the NAPLAN testing since it was first introduced. This is because Malanda SHS is a high quality school with effective learning systems in place that are continually improving.  Realistically, data sets like the NAPLAN results are important to us, as we believe we must also be able to validate our claim about the quality of our school.  Last year our results indicated that our school was a stand-out regionally and state wide, and this year the results are even better.
In line with our school’s purpose statement over the last several years, we have begun to introduce specific systems that focus on improving literacy and numeracy levels among our year 8 and 9 students.  These systems have included:
  • A structured and supported approach to the implementation of the National Curriculum in English, Maths and Science;
  • The introduction of ‘Direction Instruction’ programs to commence English and Maths lessons (these are drill and practice tests that last for approximately 15 minutes);
  • Extra assessment of student literacy and numeracy progress via tests known as PAT M & PAT R (to be administered in the first week of next Term);
  • Refined gifted and talented program initiatives such as visiting authors, the Adventure Writing Camp, Interschool Maths competitions and many others;
  • The commencement of our unique ‘Small Class’ that operates similar to a primary school class that focuses on improving high needs student results in English and Mathematics away from ‘E’ results to at least a ‘D’ or a ‘C’; and
  • Strategic planning by a range of experienced leaders and teachers in our school
