Story:

This year students in Year 10 at Malanda SHS had the opportunity to study a Soccer/Futsal unit (HPE 331) as part of their curriculum studies in semester one. Students combined the study of Exercise Physiology and Skill Acquisition with the practical fundamentals of skill development and game play principles. The practical component of the unit aims to prepare students to compete in the Far North Queensland School Futsal Titles in term two. The above students (except Mallory & Erin) competed in this tournament and reached the semi final stage. These same students were then selected in the North Queensland team to compete at the National School Futsal Championships in Melbourne. (Mallory and Erin were added to the team based on their Bill Turner Trophy performances)

The team then trained five hours a week for ten weeks leading up to the trip to Melbourne. Once at the tournament the girls soon realized that the standard of play (opponents) was a few notches above what they were used to. Therefore the girls had to step up and adapt quickly if they were to survive let alone compete in the tournament. Not surprisingly the girls soon adjusted to the increased pace of things and recorded a first up draw with Tasmania (3-3). The second game was against a more fancied North Queensland team but the girls toiled hard sticking to their game plan and recorded a very commendable one all result. Their third game was against an accomplished Queensland city team. The game was a sea-sawing encounter which saw the girls really start to believe that they could compete against a technically capable opponent. The game ended in a narrow 5-4 defeat.

The final match in their pool saw the girls come up against tournament favourites NNSW. They were classy opponents technically and tactically. The girls kept them to 3-1 at half time but ran out of puff in the second half.

Despite this the girls had done enough to progress to the semifinals where they were to meet the dreaded NNSW again. The half time result was the same 3-1 but the southerners were simply too strong running out eventual winners not only of this game but the championship as well.

Congratulations girls you did yourselves and your school proud on and off the field.

A special thanks must go out to Danielle Ross (manager), Kelly Davis & Janet Bathgate (mums) for all their efforts on tour.

Here are a few things the girls had to say:

Saige: The main experience was that we had to compete at a high level of competition which kind of tested us a little but was heaps and heaps of fun and I am looking forward to next year. PS There were some really cute guys.

Mallory: It was awesome to play futsal against extremely experienced players at a national level. It tested us and created a challenge. I don’t think I will ever have the same love for cards. PS Saige I agree. Go Tasmania!

Melissa: The best experience about going to Melbourne was getting to know new people and seeing so many cute guys. It was good because we learnt as we played and the whole trip was the best experience ever.
